Why Countee Exists
Every Making Tax Digital VAT software on the market is built for one type of business: a UK company using UK accounting software. But HMRC VAT registration is open to any business in the world that sells goods or services in the UK — and there are tens of thousands of non-UK businesses that are fully registered UK VAT payers.
These overseas businesses — from Germany, France, the Czech Republic, the United States, Australia and beyond — use their own country's accounting systems: DATEV, Pohoda, Sage France, QuickBooks US, Xero Australia, SAP, and hundreds of others. Not one of these systems connects to HMRC MTD.
Accountants manually copy VAT figures from their local software into spreadsheets, then upload via a bridging tool. Time-consuming, error-prone, and barely compliant.
Some businesses submit through workarounds that technically satisfy the digital link requirement on paper but break the audit trail between source records and the final submission.
When HMRC enquires, there is no clean digital trail from the original foreign accounting record to the submitted VAT return. That is a compliance risk no business should carry.
We are building the first MTD VAT platform designed specifically for non-UK businesses. Countee accepts original data exports from any accounting software in any country — no manual re-keying, no spreadsheet gymnastics — and submits a fully compliant VAT return directly to HMRC via the official Making Tax Digital API.
Every step of the process is logged, timestamped, and auditable. The digital link between your source accounting system and the HMRC submission is unbroken, transparent, and fully documented — exactly as MTD legislation requires.

Countee is developed in close partnership with Alchemy Tax LLP — a UK accounting practice registered in Scotland, AIA Member in Practice and Companies House Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), where our founder is a Partner. This partnership means the software is shaped by the daily reality of practising accountants, not by assumptions about what accountants need.
Our platform integrates directly with the HMRC Making Tax Digital VAT API, enabling businesses and their agents to submit VAT returns digitally in full compliance with UK MTD legislation. We operate under the HMRC Developer Hub and adhere to all API terms of use.

Frank Cross combines formal academic training with deep practical expertise across software engineering and UK accountancy. He holds a Master of Science degree, an MBA, and is an Associate of the Association of International Accountants (AIA) — one of the UK's recognised professional accountancy bodies.
Through his UK accounting practice, Frank has spent over ten years working directly with UK businesses on company formation, statutory accounts, payroll, Corporation Tax, and VAT compliance. He also developed and operates a proprietary platform integrated directly with Companies House — the only Czech-language system of its kind — demonstrating a long track record in regulated UK software.
Frank is the designated responsible individual accountable for Countee's compliance with HMRC API terms of use, UK GDPR obligations, and data protection requirements.

Making Tax Digital
Countee integrates with the HMRC MTD VAT API, providing digital VAT filing in full compliance with Making Tax Digital requirements. Our OAuth 2.0 connection means we never store your HMRC Government Gateway credentials.
All HMRC data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Customer data is processed on servers within the UK/EEA. We operate under the HMRC Developer Hub terms of use and submit full fraud prevention headers with every API call.
